Within Temptation is a Gothic/symphonic metal band from the Netherlands that has put out a number of excellent English songs in its fourteen year history. There is something about the Gothic genera that seems particularly inclined to powerful female vocals, which I am quite partial too, like Nightwish before Tarja Turunen was forced out, Emilie Autumn, or the Dresden Dolls (which i know, is technically punk cabaret, but the title was invented to avoid any kind of gothic classification, which suggests some kind of kinship).
While the band’s aesthetics borrow liberally from theological themes, the underpinnings are not terribly religious, instead being more humanistic at base, and universal. I have brewing a consideration of the relationship of the Gothic genre and “main-stream” theology, but that will have to wait for another time. For now, please just enjoy this offering, “The Howling”, and also look out for “Ice Queen” and “Gothic Christmas” and remember next year to have a Gothic Christmas, if it please you.
